Later this month the solar eclipse will be visible in DFW. It is extremely important that you take appropriate steps for you and your family to view this phenomenon safely. There are a lot of posts and links floating around for various gadgets and devices for eclipse watching. While it’s never advisable to stare directly at the sun, especially for extended periods of time, there are methods of viewing the eclipse that don’t involve direct exposure. Remember, just because the sun is blocked during an eclipse doesn’t means its rays aren’t reaching us.

Nearly two decades ago, the field of corneal transplantation changed dramatically with the introduction of DSEK. While benefits and drawbacks exist for each of these, this article will explore the two approaches in turn.

By now National Eye Donor Month is coming to a close, but at Cornea Associates we believe in espousing the importance and value of cornea donation every day. We’ve talked about the great work that the UTSW Eye and Tissue Bank and their Transplant Services Center to incredible work providing corneas and other tissue to DFW, but the Eye Bank Association of America is also worthy of note because they provide corneas (and other ocular tissue) nationwide in a network that includes the UTSW Eye and Tissue Bank.

March is National Eye Donor Month and as one of leading Cornea/Anterior Segment Care Sub-Specialists in North Texas, you can imagine we feel very strongly about donor registration. We see the impact cornea donations have on our patients literally every day. While our staff is familiar with the ins and outs of the before-and-after with cornea, we aren’t directly involved with the in-between. The middleman in this instance would be the eye bank. We are fortunate to work very closely with the UTSW Eye and Tissue Bank, and they were kind enough to let our staff tour their facility to help us get a better understanding of where our transplant grafts come from and the process by which they are obtained.

One of our technicians this last quarter raised an excellent point in passing that was heard by our office administrator that we, at Cornea Associates, needed to start giving back to the community that has helped us grow so much. Another of our employees, a member of our billing team, has been personally involved in philanthropic work with The Family Place for some time and immediately brought the organization to our attention as one that could certainly benefit from Cornea Associates’ support.

Several weeks ago I was approached by one of my fellow technicians, Megan, who knew that I was in charge of the practice newsletter and had come across an interesting patient during clinic one morning. She introduced me to Mr. George Amundson who shared that he’d been a patient of Dr. Gelender’s for a few decades. He first came to Dr. Gelender in 1998 and underwent refractive LASIK surgery. Since then he was continued regular follow-up care with Dr. Gelender and has even undergone his cataract surgery with Dr. Gelender at Cornea Associates. Mr. Amundson was kind enough to sit down with me and share his experience with refractive surgery, Dr. Gelender, and Cornea Associates of Texas.
