I have seen significant changes in cataract surgery both in the way surgery is performed, the lens implants that were available and the outcomes from surgery. Just like other technologies, cataract surgery has improved considerably. Modern surgery is now performed as an outpatient procedure using topical anesthesia with rapid recovery of vision. Additionally, lens implants are now available that can not only improve the clarity of vision but also can correct the prescription of the eye to minimize the need for spectacle or contact lens corrections after surgery. In my opinion, modern cataract surgery is as close to a miracle as you can get!

March is National Eye Donor Month and as one of leading Cornea/Anterior Segment Care Sub-Specialists in North Texas, you can imagine we feel very strongly about donor registration. We see the impact cornea donations have on our patients literally every day. While our staff is familiar with the ins and outs of the before-and-after with cornea, we aren t directly involved with the in-between. The middleman in this instance would be the eye bank. We are fortunate to work very closely with the UTSW Eye and Tissue Bank, and they were kind enough to let our staff tour their facility to help us get a better understanding of where our transplant grafts come from and the process by which they are obtained.

Days before my twenty-sixth birthday, I was gifted with the best present I could've asked for; clear vision. I'm lucky enough to work for one of the most reputable, and most successful, cornea and refractive surgery practices in the state (likely in the US). Not long after my first anniversary at the practice, I bit the bullet and scheduled my LASIK procedure. The following is the true account of my experience in doing so with Cornea Associates of Texas.

If you re a patient in a practice like ours, chances are you ve been prescribed, or are currently using, an eye drop or two. At Cornea Associates of Texas, we perform a number of different surgical procedures (LASIK/PRK, cataract extractions, corneal transplants, among others), all of which require pre- and/or postoperative instillation of ophthalmic drops. It can get pretty confusing when you ve got half a dozen different eye drops with varying doses and schedules. This article will outline some basic dos and don ts, as well as discuss FAQs and provide a fool-proof method for instill eye drops in your own eye. I can t pronounce my medication s name, how do I know which is which? An easy way to keep track of your drops is by identifying them by cap-color or label-color as opposed to by name. We aren t all pharmacists or English professors, some of these medication names can be nearly impossible to pronounce!

Chronic Dry Eye syndrome, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is one of the most common eye conditions affecting 15-20% of American adults. While most cases aren t severe, even a mild case can cause a significant amount of discomfort and threaten overall ocular health. Though we are developing a greater understanding of tear film production, experts continue to be uncertain as to the underlying cause of KCS. There are, however, various courses of treatment that can be explored to offer relief for the affected patient.
Consulting with your optometrist or ophthalmologist on a regular basis is always recommended, but is absolutely essential for patients with active ocular conditions, such as KCS. Your provider is the best person to assess your condition and render the best available treatment. Make a point to add a visit to your eye doctor as a part of your regular healthcare routine.

March is Eye Donor Awareness month. Of all the organs that can be donated, the cornea is one of the least widely known. The cornea is the eye s outermost layer that is a clear dome-like window covering the front of the eye. It allows us to see as the light is passed through to the retina (the back part of our eye).
We go to bed every night assuming that when we wake up in the morning we ll still be able to see the whole world. There are millions of people in the US that do not have that opportunity, for various reasons. One of these reasons is that they have a damaged or irregular cornea. A corneal transplant could literally change their entire outlook on life.
You can volunteer to donate your corneas for those who are in need of a cornea transplant! Sign up today at WWW.DONATELIFETEXAS.ORG.

Do you have a medical wish list? Are you considering LASIK or another out-of-pocket medical procedure, but are unsure how you could pay for it? This is an increasingly common situation for many of our patients. Medical deductibles are increasing along with the popularity of procedures like LASIK and Premium Lens Cataract surgery which are not covered by insurance plans. We offer a couple of suggestions for our patients with large out-of-pocket expenses. Alone or in combination with an FSA or HSA account, our patient financing can help make all of our procedures affordable. It is our goal to provide everyone with access to the best care available.
