Dr. Zaffos teamed up with the  Lions World Vision Institute to participate in the Japanese Society of Ophthalmic Surgery (JSOS 2026) meeting in February.

Dr. Zaffos provided leadership, guidance, and dedication to advancing surgeon education, in conjunction with local surgeons, Dr. Takahiko Hayashi, MD, PhD, MBA, and Dr. Takashi Kojima. Together, their surgical expertise provided continued support in training the next generation of corneal surgeons.

In total, 50 surgeons were educated and trained in advanced corneal transplant techniques, including TransplantREADY® DSAEK, Endo-in DMEK, and DALK—helping expand access to sight-restoring procedures around the world. Lions World Vision Institute gifted over 100 donor corneas to facilitate a realistic tissue handling experience for each of the wet labs that were held.  Dr. Zaffos was grateful to collaborate with LWVI, as his career in ophthalmology began as an eye bank technician for the Georgia Eye Bank, Inc.

Dr. Zaffos valued getting to know some of the local Japanese academic instructors and corneal surgeons. Having previously served two medical missions in Ghana, Africa, he was grateful for the opportunity to again travel abroad to lead transplant courses during the three-day ophthalmology conference.  In addition to savoring some amazing sushi, Dr. Zaffos enjoyed his time abroad and hopes to participate in many more global opportunities to share his talents and knowledge as a cornea transplant surgeon.
