A Thanksgiving Reflection: Healing Eyes and Hearts in Mombasa
This past July, Dr. Brad Bowman, along with his wife Angela and a group of 12 others from Park Cities Baptist Church, traveled to Mombasa, Kenya, to serve at the Lighthouse for Christ Eye Center and Mission. Dr. Bowman has served as a visiting surgeon at the Lighthouse Mission for the past 25 years, and this was his 13th trip to Kenya.
The Lighthouse for Christ Mission has been serving the people of East Africa since 1964. The mission cares for about 40,000 patients each year, providing medical and surgical eye care and also sharing the “good news” of Jesus Christ with the goal of “healing physical and spiritual blindness on the East Coast of Africa”.
The Lighthouse mission has three full-time Kenyan ophthalmologists and a staff of 70, and is led by mission directors, Josh and Maggie Ghrist. Dr. Bowman performs corneal transplant surgery and cataract surgery with the main goal of teaching the local doctors to enable them to provide world-class eye care to their patients.
After a long week of hard work at the mission, the mission team is treated to a three-day safari at the Masai Mara Game Park, where God’s creation is on full display. The mission provides patient care in Kenya for low cost or no cost and is supported by many churches and individual donors here in the United States.
