We are proud to share the results following LASIK achieved by the doctors at Cornea Associates of Texas. This analysis is based on a retrospective review of 382 eyes with a minimum of 2 months follow up. All patients underwent surgery with the VISX Star S2 Laser between August 2000 and Feb 2001.
We have analyzed the data and present our results to help answer a prospective patient's question "what are my chances of seeing 20/20 after undergoing LASIK surgery?" The data is presented in bar graph format comparing the percentage of eyes that achieved uncorrected visual acuities (i.e. 20/15 or better, 20/20 or better, 20/25 or better, etc.). The overall results represent the total group of patients (Table 1). In addition, the results are compared among groupings of patients based upon the relative degree of pre-operative refractive error. The refractive error is broken down into five categories, namely low myopia (-1.00 D to -3.00 D), moderate myopia (-3.01 D to -6.00 D), high myopia (-6.01 D to -9.00 D), very high myopia (greater than -9.01 D) and hyperopia (+1.00 to +6.00 D). The refractive error represents the spherical equivalent (i.e. combining the degree of myopia and astigmatism).
The overall experience reveals that 79% of our patients achieved 20/20 or better after LASIK (See Table 1) . Equally impressive, is the finding that fully 100% achieved a minimum of 20/30 vision. As we compare the results among the various groups of refractive errors, we can see that the low myopia patients did the best and that as the degree of myopia increases, the chances of achieving 20/20 decreases (See Table 2) . However, it should be pointed out that if vision is under-corrected, then an enhancement procedure, i.e. additional touch up surgery, will further improve the vision. In our group of patients, 8.3% elected to have enhancement surgery. This was more common among patients with higher degrees of myopia.
We also compared our results with published statistics from FDA clinical trials using the same VISX Star S2 Laser (See Table 3). We are most pleased that we exceeded the FDA trials by a significant margin. Whereas Cornea Associates doctors achieved 20/20 in 79% of patients, FDA data shows that only 58% achieved this level of vision. How can we explain this 21% "improvement?" We believe our expertise as cornea specialists and our commitment to excellence in every aspect of LASIK care is reflected by our outstanding results.
Our laser system has been upgraded to the new VISX Star S4 Laser. In our opinion, this represents state-of-the-art technology, and it should further improve our clinical results. At Cornea Associates of Texas, we are committed to providing the highest quality of care to ensure the best possible results for our patients.
