Wavefront LASIK is an innovative improvement upon the traditional LASIK procedure that produces a more precise result, crafted to the unique contours and vision needs of each patient. In addition, LASIK using Wavefront technology expands the pool of candidates who can improve their vision with LASIK laser eye surgery. Patients who were turned away from LASIK previously may be good candidates for Wavefront LASIK as the technology keeps their aberrations—or visual abnormalities—and individual vision specifications in mind when creating a 3D image. The result is exact results with fewer potential risks.

The procedure is similar to traditional LASIK, though there are key differences. It all begins with a consultation with an experienced laser eye surgeon, who will assess your candidacy for Wavefront LASIK. Once considered a candidate, you will be given pre-surgical instructions. Since the computer technology measures your eye in its natural state, you must stop wearing contact lenses a week before your treatment. Ignoring this instruction can lead to imprecise results.

The day of the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops. Next a suction ring will be placed on your cornea to ensure that your eye doesn’t move around during treatment. A flap is created to expose the middle portion of the cornea—the part that will be reshaped to improve your vision. Wavefront LASIK uses an Allegretto wave laser, or another approved laser, that measures abnormalities in your vision and sends that information to a computer, where a map and 3D image of your eye and vision errors are documented. From there, precise calculations are sent to the refractive laser, which removes the exact amount of tissue necessary to reshape the cornea and improve vision. Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap is placed back over the cornea and you will be given instructions to follow during the healing period. The LASIK procedure with Wavefront technology is similar to traditional LASIK but with an extra step, which improves the safety and efficacy of the treatment.
